When you’re working with a large real estate deal, it’s important to have someone in your corner who knows the intricacies of the sensitive real estate deals inside and out. A real estate counselor can help you get the best deal on a property, and can also guide you through the process of buying or selling major property contracts.

In this article, we will discuss what a real estate counselor is, how they differ from an agent or Broker, and why you should consult with one.

What is a Real Estate Counselor?

A real estate counselor – also known as a Counselor of Real Estate (CRE) – is a professional who provides guidance and advice to those buying or selling property. Unlike an agent or broker, the title is a registered trademark designation for certain members of the National Association of Realtors (NAR) who qualify.

Real estate counselors typically have extensive years of experience in the industry, and they use their knowledge to help their clients get the best possible exchange on a property, and can provide valuable insights into the real estate market.

However, Counselors of Real Estate are not just limited to agents and brokers. In fact, the title can include a number of disciplines in the real estate and finance industries, including:

  • Accountants
  • Appraisers
  • Attorneys
  • Bankers
  • Brokers
  • Land planners
  • Property developers
  • Property managers
  • Real estate account executives, and more

CREs are only able to be invited to join this designation if they have completed the following:

  • Have at least 10 years of experience, with three of those years in counseling
  • A proven track record of providing meaningful counseling to clients
  • Currently hold a senior role in their firm
  • Adhere to other stringent requirements of NAR membership

What Are the Benefits of Working with a Real Estate Counselor?

There are many reasons why you should consult with a real estate counselor before buying or selling a home:

1. Experienced guidance – Real estate counselors have a wealth of experience and knowledge about the real estate market. They can help you understand the market conditions in your area and can provide valuable insights into the buying and selling process.

2. Objective advice – They can help you compare different properties and can provide impartial information about the pros and cons of each option.

3. Negotiation expertise – Real estate counselors are experienced negotiators. They can help you get the best possible price on a property, and can also negotiate with sellers on your behalf.

4. Peace of mind – When you work with a real estate counselor, you can be confident that you’re getting the best possible advice and guidance. This can give you peace of mind during the buying or selling process.

If you’re thinking about engaging in a large real estate deal, we encourage you to consult with a real estate counselor. The professionals at the National Association of Realtors can help you find a qualified counselor in your area.
