Margo Christophilis is a Realtor and Washington native who has helped many people transition into retirement and discover their perfect Washington home. This list of the best places to retire in Washington is a must-read for anyone considering a move.

Retirement is a time to embrace the places that bring you joy, comfort, and a sense of adventure.  Whether you’re planning to explore the world or settle closer to family, Washington State offers a wealth of vibrant communities, diverse landscapes, and a milder climate. The Evergreen State offers everything from serene coastal towns to lush forests to lively urban centers. Furthermore, Washington has something to offer every retiree.

Check out the best places to retire in Washington.

Snoqualmie

If you drive just 25 miles outside of Seattle, you will be surrounded by the natural beauty of Snoqualmie.

Known for the beautiful Snoqualmie Falls and recognized as Home of the Boeing Classic, this small town has boundless recreation, great food and pioneer history. Imagine being 25 miles from a metropolitan city and 20 miles from a ski resort. Who wouldn’t want to be in the middle of this fun?

While the prices of homes are slightly higher than Seattle’s, this is an excellent spot if you want to resize to a condo. With the minimal maintenance required for a condo, they can be a perfect location for retirees.

North Bend

Ever watched the show Twin Peaks? Love cherry pie and coffee? Well, then, North Bend is a place you may want to consider for retirement.

Just 33 miles from Seattle and the neighboring town of Snoqualmie, homes start around $650K.

This town is not only surrounded by trails for hiking and biking but it also offers residents a family-like community. With its annual “Christmas Carol” play by the Valley Center Stage, you may wonder if you’re in a Hallmark movie.

North Bend has so much to offer people desiring a calmer, sweeter life while also being close to bustling cities.

Lake Chelan

Are you a water activity enthusiast? Then let’s migrate over to Chelan. If you want to be close to conveniences and surrounded by stunning nature and outdoor activities, Lake Chelan is the place for you.

This area is a summer hot spot for city dwellers because it is a few hours from Seattle. Chelan has all of the fun that boaters and outdoor enthusiasts enjoy. This fun-filled city will draw friends and family to you, as everyone will want to visit you and enjoy all of the activities that Chelan has to offer. If you love hosting, Chelan is the perfect location for you.

While the median home price in Chelan is around $1.1M, depending on location and size, this area offers many affordable homes.

However, if you’re looking to significantly decrease your housing expenses or find a summer vacation spot in Washington, let’s take a look at one of my favorite areas, the Olympic Peninsula.

The Peninsulas

The Olympic Peninsula is located across the Puget Sound from Seattle and has 1,442 square miles of adventure for everyone.

This destination is like no other and hosts some of the most beautiful natural wildlife in the Pacific Northwest. Nestled around the Olympic mountain range this area boasts an abundance of beaches, mountains, rainforests, trails, waterfalls and stunning viewpoints.

Along with all of this beauty you will get to explore some of the most charming towns, with each one bringing their unique flare to the area.

Poulsbo

Known as “Little Norway,” the charming little town of Poulsbo is located on the Kitsap Peninsula just north of Bainbridge Island.

Filled with Scandinavian heritage and Norse motifs this historic town is full of art galleries and shops with fine and casual dining options. Poulsbo is also home to a number of award-winning breweries.

The median price of a Poulsbo median home is around $685K.

Rich in first nations’ history this town is perfect for those looking for a picturesque walkable city.

Ocean Shores

If you’re looking for a place to retire where you will get a consistent sea breeze and colorful kites to view while you walk along a 23 mile beach, well, look no further. Ocean Shores is a small coastal city known for its long Pacific beach, access to local lakes/ waterways, and a haven for bird watchers.

Homeowners are offered very affordable living, with homes starting as low as $250K. This town is a lovely location in which to enjoy retirement quietly. If you enjoy hosting friends and family, Ocean Shores’ charming downtown, ample shopping, and varietal restaurant selection are fun for everyone.

Port Townsend

Port Townsend is one of the best places to retire in Washing with its stunning Victorian architecture, fantastic art scene, and stunning water views.

The town is fantastic for retirees who enjoy festivals, art galleries, and outdoor activities.

The median home price in Port Townsend is $700K, and many Seattleites frequently have a getaway retreat there. If you’re looking for a lovely community with a rich history and an abundance of outdoor adventures, then this is the place for you!

Sequim

A ferry ride and a short drive just east of Port Angeles, this thriving community has so much to offer year-round. Known as the “Lavender Capital of North America,” this town has fun for all seasons.

The median home price in Sequim is $625K, and has a variety of special homes to choose from.

This city offers a more affordable lifestyle and has a unique microclimate that experiences less rainfall than other parts of Western Washington.

From music in the park to farmers’ and artisans’ markets, this town has so much to offer. Retirees can enjoy the rich community and local amenities. Yet, Seattle is easily accessible via a short ferry ride.

Seabrook

The beach town of Seabrook has so much to offer for those who prefer to live in a more walkable neighborhood.

Prices of homes can start as low as $500K, and each area in the town offers residents a unique and cozy vibe. Designed for community, this small town is close to Olympic National Park, walking distance to the beach, and nestled along the 109 highway scenic drive.

This township was thoughtfully planned throughout the development with a low carbon footprint in mind. Who wouldn’t want to preserve all the natural beauty around this area?

East of Seattle

Many retirees desire to move away from the hustle and bustle when they are looking for their next move. Some are looking for a new place that is close enough to the grandchildren but far enough away to get a little peace and quiet.

The suburbs just east of Seattle are one of the best place to retire in Washington. They offer peaceful living with easy access to urban amenities. While the cost of housing and living is similar to Seattle, the suburbs provide more space and a quieter life that many retirees find attractive.
