CHALLIS IDAHO - Founded in 1876. Challis is a small community situated in a scenic valley surrounded by many mountain ranges. The Boulder, White Cloud, and Sawtooth Mountains are only 60 miles away surrounding Stanley and it's many lakes. Mt. Borah, Idaho's highest peak at 12,662 feet is only 25 miles away. Boise, the capital city, is just under a 4 hour drive away. Sun Valley, the Bitterroot Mountain range, the Continental Divide, the birthplace of Sacajawea, Yellowstone National Park, Jackson Hole Wyoming, and the Grand Tetons are nearby points of interest. Challis is a mile high in elevation. With the Salmon River running through the valley, there is plenty to do when it comes to recreation. Hunting, lake and stream fishing, steelhead fishing, hiking, camping, boating, kayaking, white water rafting, snow machining, skiing, and many more outside recreational activities are enjoyed right here in our backyard. The only trails leading into the Frank Church River of no Return Wilderness Area is nearby. This is the largest single wilderness area in the lower 48 states. The wildlife is abundant with deer, elk, big horn sheep, mountain goats, wild horses, bald eagles, and much more. Due to the location of our valley our weather is varied and for the most part quite pleasant. We have a lot of sunshine all year long.
