He could have been a rock star, but instead, Ivan Blanco took his inimitable talents back to high schoolaEUR"this time, as an English teacher. Rather than jamming with the Stones or helping David Lee Roth pick the brown M&M's out of his candy bowl, he sacrificed the way all educators are expected to do: become "the Catcher in the Rye" for someone else's children while their own pay the price. And rather than chase his own dreams, he read about the dreams of others and shared them with his students. While he felt fulfilled helping others, the lack of upward mobility began to eat away at his passion for the classroom. He was resigned, like so many educators sadly become. That is, until Martin Luther King, Jr. day in 2014, when all of that resignation led to an enlightening conversation with a longtime friend who had opened his own real estate brokerage. He too had been a teacher, but entering real estate, he seemed more fulfilled now than at any time since. "Don't you miss the classroom?" Ivan asked over lunch that day. "Don't you miss helping people?" His friend smiled that familiar wry smile Ivan had known for 20 years. "I still help people, brother," he said. "Only now I help them achieve their dreams rather than just telling them about them." Ivan knew he had to make a change, and, as his 31st birthday barreled closer, it became apparent that the time for that change was now upon him. So, with a typical teacher's savings of $1500 in the bank and a freshly minted real estate license, he left the school system at the end of the academic year and plunged headfirst into his new career. And soon, people saw the face behind the suit. They called Ivan "profA(C)," " Spanish slang for "Professor," because he had adapted his teaching skills to become their body of knowledge for any and all real estate needs. He was their guy " he was their Real Estate Professor. All that work paid off in time, and in his first year, Ivan closed more business than any first-year agent at his brokerage had ever closed. He never quit, even when a deal seemed to be on its last legs, because he knew he had people's trust in his hands. And he also took his earned title as The Real Estate Professor seriously. No, Ivan never got to be the 5th Beatle, but hey " he can say now that these are the best of times. He's the new catcher in the rye. They call him "Professor," and sometimes "ProfA(C)," because it's not just his job to deliver results, but to ensure his clients feel empowered about their choices today, tomorrow, and for the rest of their lives. 1) What advice would you give a buyer trying to purchase a home?
First time buyers: This isn't your forever home, and the statistics show you'll be selling within five years. Don't go overboard; this is meant to get your foot into the real estate game, so that next time around you can get more credit from a lender, and go for what you want with the equity you're building.
For seasoned home buyers: Don't trust Zillow/Trulia/Realtor.com/etc. Ever. They are the WebMD of the real estate world, and do more harm than good by setting up false expectations. You've been through this before: You know where the pitfalls are going to be. Trust in an agent that can build as sturdy a bridge as possible for you to get over those pitfalls.
2) What advice would you give a seller trying to sell their home?
Listen to the market, and try to take your emotional involvement out of the house if possible. While everyone has a connection to their home, it's imperative to look at the sale as a business transaction as much as possible. I can say with experience that price is the #1 determining factor for why a home doesn't sell...and no amount of promises any old Realtor will make can fix that.
3) What types of clients have you worked with?
Zombies, mummies, the walking dead, those forced to roam the cursed earth for all time...pretty much anyone who starred as a background dancer Michael Jackson's "Thriller." :)
In all seriousness, I've worked with all types, & I have no preference, so long as they are as dedicated to buying/selling as I am to helping them.
4) Describe a recent transaction you are fond of. How did it go?
We tiptoed through the tulips, Realtor and client hand-in-hand, as we laughed away the summer morn and watched the stars come out at night to illuminate our flawless inspection report.
Also, they were punctual, and got everything done right away. I look at being a Realtor like being a coach: You're in the game, but I can see what's going on down field. The choice is yours whether to zig or zag, but you hired me for a reason, so let me go out there and coach you the best I can.
Those clients that are open to this are the ones I get along best with. We even bring picnic baskets to our spot in the tulip gardens (hint: I like pimento and cheese).
5) How did you get started in Real Estate?
I've always had a love of sales and a bigger love for helping people. Teaching is great, but I wanted to work on my own schedule, and real estate provided that opportunity. It wasn't easy, as the market was still topsy-turvy when I went for my license back in 2013, but those (very) tough few months helped teach me about how much I can take...and how hard I'm willing to work to make my clients happy.
6) Do you have any special education or training that will benefit your clients?
I earned my college degree as an English teacher, and taught in the Miami-Dade County Public School system for over five years before becoming a Realtor. I dealt with all types of students to all ability levels, from EBD all the way to Advanced Placement. There is very little that throws me off my game because of it, and I thank those years in front of a classroom as the thing that taught me empathy and hardened my resolve.
I mean, if you can sell Shakespeare to a group of text-happy teens, you can do pretty much anything.
